Greek Alphabet in Math

Quantitative finance relies heavily on the Greek alphabet. While it looks like a foreign language, in math, Greek letters are just used as standard variables (like (x) or (y)) to represent specific concepts.

Common Greek Letters

In English, we use (a), (b), (c). In Greek, the equivalents are Alpha ((\alpha)), Beta ((\beta)), and Gamma ((\gamma)). In finance, these three letters are incredibly common, especially in investments:

  • (\alpha) (Alpha): Represents the excess return of an investment relative to the return of a benchmark index. If an investment "has alpha", it means it's beating the market.
  • (\beta) (Beta): Represents the volatility of an investment compared to the market as a whole. A beta greater than 1 means the asset is more volatile than the market.
  • (\gamma) (Gamma): Used in options trading to measure the rate of change in an option's delta.

Delta and Change

One of the most common symbols you will see is the capital letter Delta ((\Delta)). In mathematics and finance, (\Delta) almost always means "change in".

If you see an expression like (\Delta P), you read it as "the change in price". It is usually calculated as the new price minus the old price. If a stock was $100 and is now $105, then (\Delta P = 5).

The lowercase delta ((\delta)) is also used, often in calculus to represent a very, very small change, or in options pricing to represent the sensitivity of an option's price to a $1 change in the underlying asset.

Mu and Sigma in Statistics

When dealing with statistics and probability (which are foundational to quant finance), two Greek letters are used everywhere:

  • Mu ((\mu)): The lowercase "m" of the Greek alphabet. It is used to represent the mean or average of a population.
  • Sigma ((\sigma)): The lowercase "s" of the Greek alphabet. It is used to represent the standard deviation, which is a measure of how spread out the numbers are.

Another very important use of the Greek letter Sigma is its uppercase version, (\Sigma). The capital Sigma represents Summation, which we will cover in the Functions section.
